Building on the Strengths of Our stories – Cultural Agility program
The Department of Resources took deliberate steps to prioritise building cultural capability and in 2017 partnered with Ms Leann Wilson from Regional Economic Solutions to develop Building on the Strengths of our Stories cultural agility program. The program forms part of the department’s suite of development programs that is mandatory for all staff to complete. Building on the Strengths of our Stories aligns with
the Qld Government Path to Treaty commitment ‘Truth Telling’ and further strengthens our responsibility to reframe our relationship with First Nations peoples.
Details about the Program
The program is co facilitated by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Futures Team at the Department of Resources with renowned First Nations Leader Leann Wilson and her son Leroy Wilson, both Bidjara/Kara-Kara and South Sea Islander descendants. Leann is the Managing Director of Regional Economic Solutions which she and her business partner started almost 10 years ago.
The program is designed to provide greater insight into ‘who we are’ as Australia’s First Nations People. The approach draws upon the ancient practice of storytelling where participants are engaged on a journey of truth telling.
Through unpacking the intentions of legislative frameworks enacted on First Nation People, a depth of understanding is built around cause and effect and how this shapes current day circumstances and practices. The approach challenges participants thinking beyond the rhetoric and towards a true shared space of understanding and collaboration.
Building on the Strengths of our Stories is a wonderful opportunity for workshop participants to build on the strengths of our collective stories and to celebrate our culture.
The program is facilitated over two days 9.30am-4.30pm each day.

The Building on the Strengths of our Stories training is a collaboration between Regional Economic Solutions and Queensland Government.
